To help drive progress in 2025, Convatec is launching it's second version of the global sustainability internship programme across a range of sustainability disciplines, from materials scientists to mechanical engineers – to focus on specific opportunities and help prepare the workforce of the future to drive sustainability. Interns will be placed across our Global Quality & Operations, Technology & Innovation, and Global Corporate Affairs teams.
Sustainability internship programme
Convatec’s sustainability internship programme will offer emerging leaders the opportunity to engage in a variety of focused topics during Q3. The aim of the programme is to give interns a learning experience that allows the application of skills and development in a professional setting, whilst supporting our subject matter experts to advance key priority projects.
Convatec is seeking a materials science intern (full time) to join our Materials Science team based at Convatec Technology Center – Boston to support us on our journey to embed sustainability practices across the company.
This intern will conduct research on the medical device materials to help Convatec identify opportunities to reduce the carbon footprint associated with our materials. In addition, the intern will evaluate different sterilization methods and their interactions with these materials.
Length of assignment: 3 months
Key Responsibilities:
Literature review of different sterilization methods for medical devices, and their effect on key materials in our portfolioIdentification of new & emerging sterilization methods and test facilities or potential collaborators to trial these methods.Physical testing of medical device materials, including techniques such as tensile testing, TGA, DSC, DMA, Electron and Optical microscopy, contact angle and FTIR.Conducting experiments, including preparing samples, executing experiments, troubleshooting if necessary, recording all data, and conducting limited data analysisCommunication of results in written technical reports and presentations.Skills & Experience:
Excellent written skills and ability to communicate clearly and conciselyStrong computer skills including MS office suiteAbility to track and execute project priorities Ability to experiment, troubleshoot, and “learn by doing.” Laboratory experience including a demonstrated understanding of general laboratory safetyGood organization and record-keepingExperience with thermal and/or mechanical testing of polymers is desiredQualifications/Education:
Student pursuing a degree in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field with an emphasis on polymers. Student is ideally a MS or PhD student, though a rising senior BS student would also be considered.Supporting the next generation
