Principal Robotics Systems Development Engineer, Amazon Robotics

The Manipulation Robotics group develops robotic material handling products that increase the safety and efficiency of our fulfillment operations. Our products are deployed across the Amazon Fulfillment Network, automating material flow to reduce operational costs, increase throughput, and enable consistent quality. Our workcells are integrated into broader solutions for storage, packaging, sortation, and transportation of items and packages. The Team consists of engineers and scientists tasked with new product introduction from early technology exploration to large-scale deployed systems. Key job responsibilities Amazon Robotics is seeking a Principal Robotics Systems Development Engineer to join a dynamic team that provides leadership for concept development, architecture, and design of robotics systems and industrial equipment. The Principal Robotics Systems Development Engineer will be responsible for: • Designing architectures for robotics and industrial automation equipment • Identify and analyze the cross-functional tradeoffs between design alternatives to establish system requirements and goals • Identify design choices to ensure our products are safe, reliable, and usable, and can be deployed and supported at Amazon scale • Support hardware and software development for experimental and prototype robotic systems • Develop and communicate system integration and evaluation strategies and plans in support of program learning, technical risk reduction, verification, and validation • Drive and prioritize execution of system test campaigns that span lab and field testing environments in partnership with subsystem development and test teams (test readiness reviews, test execution, post-test analysis and reporting) • Perform technical gap analysis in support of organizational strategy and technical roadmap development • Mentor junior engineers in engineering best practices, and participate in hiring of new team members Basic Qualifications - BS / MS Electrical Engineering (or similar field) - 9 years of experience in complex hardware/software systems - Demonstrated strong ability to move seamlessly between levels of abstraction – from system to the “nuts and bolts” implementation - Hands on experience developing hardware and software prototypes - Solid debugging skills and the ability to diagnose and solve difficult problems - Experience with eliciting and clarifying business and end user needs, and linking those needs to system concepts, requirements, and designs - Experience participating in technical collaborations and creating alignment across diverse groups (e.g., hardware engineering, software engineering, program management) Preferred Qualifications - 12+ years of experience designing controls for robotics and industrial automation equipment Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.
