About the Department
The Lab Manager supports research by maintaining animal health records, monitoring animal well-being, assisting with surgeries and behavioral training, and managing lab supply orders. It also oversees daily operations of the UChicago XROMM Facility, including coordinating billing and safety compliance, training users, maintaining equipment, supporting data collection, and assisting with grant preparation.
Job Summary
Responsibilities
XROMM Facility Operation Management:
Manage the collection of facility charges for OSRF.
Coordinate with the Office of Radiation Safety for billing, distribution, and collection of radiation monitoring badges, and distribution of annual user reports.
Manage maintenance and repairs of equipment.
Trains users in the safe use of equipment.
Learn the XROMM workflow to help users troubleshoot data collection.
Assist the XROMM facility Director in the preparation of grants as needed.
Other Responsibilities:
Manage and order lab supplies. Track inventory, place supply orders, coordinate with vendors, and ensure timely delivery to support lab operations.
Takes responsibility for the following laboratory duties: recognizing abnormal results and varying conditions or procedures to correct problems; setting up and performing experiments. Analyze the meaning, significance, causes, and effects of the subject.
Applies research principles and relevant subject matter knowledge relevant to administer a research project. With a moderate level of direction, manages lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Helps develop, design and conduct research projects according to plan.
Supports data collection and analytical needs of research projects. Conducts literature reviews and helps write reports and manuscripts. Ensures project compliance with different policies, procedures, directives, and mandates.
Takes responsibility for the following non-laboratory duties: transcribing and coding data; developing data collection instruments; presenting research; and recruiting and scheduling research subjects. Acquires higher-level skills and knowledge in the process.
Performs other related work as needed.

Education:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Biology.
Experience:
Experience providing training to users on the safe and effective operation of specialized lab equipment, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
Experience with rodent, rabbit, and/or primate handling.
Technical Skills or Knowledge:
Proficiency in MS Office Suite and web-based applications.
Preferred Competencies
Understanding of an XROMM facility workflow, supporting users by troubleshooting technical issues during data collection.
Solid skills in organizing information, written communication, and training.
Strong analytical and organizational skills.
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
