The Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mainframe IMS System Programmer to support and maintain our IMS environment. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in IMS performance analysis, system tuning, product upgrades, and RSU (Recommended Service Upgrade) implementations using SMP/E. Additionally, they will provide support to developers, manage connectivity with DB2, MQ z/OS, and IBM IIB, and ensure system reliability and high availability. The candidate should also have strong experience with MainView (BMC AMI Ops) for IMS monitoring and performance management, ensuring optimal system health, resource utilization, and incident resolution

Key Responsibilities:

IMS System Administration & Performance Management

Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot IBM IMS (Information Management System) environments on z/OS

Perform IMS system tuning and performance optimization using IBM IMS Performance Analyzer and MainView for IMS (BMC AMI Ops)

Utilize MainView dashboards and alerting to monitor IMS health, transactions, and workload

Manage IMS logs, buffers, pools, and resource utilization for optimized performance
 

Software Maintenance & Upgrades

Implement IMS software upgrades and patches using SMP/E

Perform RSU (Recommended Service Upgrade) maintenance and apply corrective service (PTFs, APARs)

Work on z/OS upgrade projects to ensure compatibility with IMS and other subsystems

IMS & DB2/MQ/IIB Integration

Ensure seamless connectivity between IMS, DB2, MQ z/OS, and IBM IIB

Troubleshoot communication and transaction processing issues between IMS and other components

Work closely with DB2 and MQ administrators to optimize resource sharing and data flow

Monitoring & Troubleshooting

Utilize MainView (BMC AMI Ops) for IMS, DB2, and MQ to track system health, detect anomalies, and improve performance

Leverage MainView historical data for IMS performance analysis and root cause investigation

Automate alerts and performance reports using MainView scripting and automation

Use IMS Performance Analyzer for deep-dive analysis on system inefficiencies and optimizations

Identify and resolve system bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and failures proactively

Developer & Application Support

Provide technical guidance to developers on IMS databases, transaction management, and application optimization

Assist in debugging IMS-related application performance issues

Support application deployment and integration in IMS environments

Security & Compliance

Ensure IMS system security policies align with organizational and industry compliance standards

Manage IMS user access controls and authentication mechanisms using RACF

Support audits and security reviews for IMS-related processes

Required Skills and Experience

Technical Skills:

IMS System Administration – strong expertise in IMS DB and IMS TM on z/OS

SMP/E – experience with installing and maintaining IMS software, PTFs, and RSUs

IMS Performance Analyzer – proficiency in analyzing and optimizing IMS performance

MainView (BMC AMI Ops) for IMS, DB2, and MQ – experience in real-time and historical monitoring, automation, and reporting

DB2 Connectivity – experience in setting up IMS-DB2 connections, ODBA, and DBCTL

MQ z/OS Integration – knowledge of IMS-MQ interactions and troubleshooting message queue issues

IBM IIB (Integration Bus) – Understanding of message flow integration between IMS and IIB

JCL, REXX, and CLIST – Ability to write, modify, and optimize JCL jobs and automation scripts

RACF Security – Basic knowledge of user authentication and IMS security mechanisms

Soft Skills:

Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills in Mainframe environments

Excellent communication and collaboration skills to support developers and infrastructure teams

Ability to work independently and drive IMS upgrades and system improvements

Strong documentation skills for technical procedures and change management

Experience in a high-availability, mission-critical IMS environment

Fluency in English

Preferred Qualifications:

10+ years of IMS system programming experience in a z/OS environment.

Hands-on experience with IMS product upgrades and migrations.

Experience with disaster recovery (DR) planning and execution for IMS.

IBM or equivalent certifications in IMS, z/OS system administration, or MainView (BMC AMI Ops) (preferred but not required).
